Keeping Your Fruits and Vegetables Fresh

So you love your Avocado Food Box but are not sure how to keep your vegetables fresh for a week?

Here are few tips to help you get the most out of the fuits and vegetables in your box.

What do I do if the Avocados, apricots or other fruits are not yet ripe when I get them in my box?

  • Leave the fruits on the counter. Once the fruits have reached the desired ripeness store in the fridge.
  • Put the unripe fruit in a closed paperbag together with a couple of ripe gas producing fruits, especially bananas or apples.

How do I keep my salad, fresh herbs and other leafy greens crisp for a whole week?

  • Wrap the greens in a moist (not wet!) teatowel and seal everything in a thin platic bag. This will keep the greens crisp for a week. you can also just use humid kitchen paper.
  • If you only need half of your salad, wash the whole salad and dry with a salad spinner. Wrap the salad which you dont need in kitchen paper and place in a ziplock bag. Carefully squeeze the air out, close the bag and store in the fridge. This will keep the salad fresh for a week and easy to use next time you need it.

General advice on storing vegetables:

  • Use the vegetable drawers in your fridge. They are escpecially made to help with keeping the right moisture and temperature to keep your vegetable and fruits fresh.
  • Store all gas releasing fruits and vegetables seperate from gas sensitive fruits and vegetables!
  • Gas releasing fruits and vegetables include: apples, apricots, avocados, bananas (ripe), blueberries, cantaloupe, cherimoyas, cranberries, figs, green onions, guavas, grapes, honeydew, kiwifruit, mangoes, mangosteen, nectarines, papayas, passion fruit, peaches, pears, persimmons, plums, potatoes, prunes, quince, tomatoes
  • Gas sensitive fruits and vegetables include: asparagus, bananas (unripe), blackberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, cucumbers, eggplant, endive, garlic, green beans, kale, leafy greens, leeks, lettuce, okra, onions, parsley, peas, peppers, raspberries, spinach, squash, strawberries, sweet potatoes, watercress, watermelon
